FlightPad, University of West London
Future Pilot Skills Event – Volunteering with The Air League.
In January 2025, I volunteered for The Air League at FlightPad’s Future Pilot Skills Event at the University of West London.
This was a last minute decision – as I had booked a ticket to attend and decided to also volunteer for my favourite organisation! What better than network, educate and inspire all in single event. The event was an amazing opportunity to connect with a diverse group of people and inspire the next generation of aviators, especially those from less privileged backgrounds.
The focus of the event was to give aspiring pilots the tools, advice, and motivation they need to pursue careers in aviation—and it was such an inspiring experience to be a part of.
Volunteering with Janine Hornsby, CEO of Air League
On the day I was honoured to be volunteering with Janine, CEO of The Air League; and volunteers Dan and Jeevan.

One of the highlights of the event was working alongside Janine Hornsby, the CEO of the Air League. She has a long history in the aerospace and aviation industries, having previously worked for Marshall and education roles, she has a strong focus on inspiring young people to reach their full potential. Her leadership at the Air League excites me as she champions diversity and makes aviation more accessible.
One example of this is through Janine’s ability to build strong rapport. Something about her makes her easy to connect with and relatable. This resonated really well with the younger cohort on the day I felt. She mentioned one thing that really excited me. She said she’s working behind the scenes to shift the Young Aviators Dinner (an annual dinner Air League event that takes place in the summer) – from the RAF club to a new venue (University of West London).
This is a bold decision, but honestly the best one. For young people – particularly, from less privileged backgrounds, the RAF club can seem daunting. I remember being in the Air Squadron (having come from a similar background) and feeling the same way. I definitely believe this small change will have a great impact in driving more diversity and inclusion for a lot more individuals. This is one example of many of how Janine is being a powerhouse at The Air League. Props to Janine.

Inspiring the Next Generation
The event was packed with young individuals eager to learn about aviation and the various pathways into becoming pilots. Many of whom come from less privileged backgrounds, and this made the experience even more rewarding. As you know, I love volunteering – I’m in my element here – so it was fantastic to be here on behalf of the Air League once again.
One particular interaction stood out to me during the event—two brothers who truly inspired me. They were refugees, having lost their parents, and yet they were determined to make something of themselves and pursue their dream of becoming pilots. Despite the challenges they had faced, their drive and passion were palpable. They were so motivated, and it was clear that they saw aviation as a way to build a better future for themselves.
I was able to speak with them about different routes into aviation, explaining how they could access the scholarships and opportunities offered by the Air League. I also advised them on the modular training programs and how this could be a potential option as they lacked the funding. The Air League’s scholarships are a lifeline for aspiring pilots like them, and I encouraged them to apply, as they are the sort of individuals The Air League loves seeing come through.
Their story really touched me, and it reaffirmed why I do what I do with The Air League. I hope one day I can continue to inspire whilst flying as an airline pilot.

Networking
I also had the opportunity to network with all friends – old and new across the event. It’s always refreshing to see familiar faces and having a good, old catchup!
One thing I will add – networking is so important in aviation. The aviation industry is really collaborative – feel free to reach out to people – it’s very likely they’ll be happy to help.
Catching up with the TUI team
During the day, I had the great opportunity to catch up with the TUI team. I had a great catch up with Ishan and Martin Smith.
I also attended their TUI MPL Programme presentation. It was super insightful and prepares you well for the application – for those that haven’t applied, I would highly recommend doing so if you’re considering to become an airline pilot. I have made a separate blog about their presentation which can be found here.

Catching up with British Airways and team
I caught up with Bhavesh, one of the 2024 Speedbird Pilot Academy (SPA) cadets. Funnily enough, we’ve spoken a few times online – but hadn’t met in person. So it was a great coincidence.
I also met Lucy Silvester, Pilot Recruitment Manager for the first time. It was great talking about the last years cohorts – the drive, tenacity and motivation that was seen throughout the SPA process. We also spoke about BA’s incredible investment in other peoples future – including, many young people for whom this will be their first job and career!
During the day – there was also opportunity for individuals to have their CV scanned by a recruiter – giving individuals an opportunity to improve their CVs before applying to cadet programmes.
There was also a group assessment taking place throughout the afternoon – great way to get to grips with what recruiters look for and what soft skills are really important in a team project.
And finally, there was an opportunity to have a go on the sim – I believe this year it was a joystick computer sim as opposed to the full Boeing 737 set up they have. Nonetheless, the top 3 performers were in a chance to experience a free 1-hour sim session.
There was a lot going on during the skills event. Incredible day filled with insight. I’d highly recommend attending one if you haven’t. All in all, it was a great day out.
