Young People Networking Evening
In November 2024, I attended the Young Persons Networking Reception hosted by the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) in London. In support by Aviation Logistics Network Ltd.
As someone who’s really passionate about becoming an airline pilot, I jumped at the opportunity to network at the Young Person’s Networking Reception. The evening started with an inspirational speech by Chris Hope, Chief Operating Officer at One Air. For anyone who hasn’t heard of One Air – they’re the only Boeing 747 operating British Airline! (Just some AvGeek knowledge for everyone. Always great to see them at Heathrow!)

Later through the evening, I connected with a diverse and dynamic group of individuals, and we shared our experiences in aviation. What stood out to me right away was how easy it was to talk to anyone, no matter their level of experience. Everyone was just there to chat, learn from each other, and build connections. It was great hearing about peoples dream – whether that was to become an aeronautical engineer, a pilot, aeronaut or work within medical transportation. Super inspiring.

The reception was a great example of meeting inspiring people in an industry that drives me to become better personally and professionally. I later spoke to Chris Hope 1-2-1 around logistics and challenges through cargo operations. We also spoke about the importance of self-development through research, skills and experiences. A key insight in a time where there is greater emphasis on competency-based development and resilience.

I also happened to bump into Janine Hornsby, the new CEO of the Air League. I saw her in the distance and couldn’t miss her purple hair. She’s an incredible person and a great fit for the Air League. At the Air League Annual Reception she spoke about her vision going forwards. Speaking to her at other occasions – such as the Heathrow animal transportation tour – I knew right away she’ll be such an asset to the Air League – really excited to see what the future brings.

One take-home message for me was no matter what you dream – keep pushing and you’ll make it one day. The incredible people I networked with are a great testimony of that – some of which I remember meeting almost 10 years ago! The industry is incredibly small – meeting people after a while and hearing how well they’re doing in their personal and professional life is always refreshing.
Overall, the Young Person’s Networking Reception was an amazing experience. It was inspiring and gave me a sense of belonging in an industry I’ve always dreamed of being a part of. If you’re someone who’s interested in aviation and aerospace, or even just starting your career, I’d highly recommend attending one of these events. It’s not only about meeting people—it’s about building relationships, learning from those who’ve been there, and realising that you’re not alone on this journey. Also a side note – I always forget how terrible traffic in London is! And the parking is worse. I can confirm I got away with zero parking fines one again. The aviation Gods must be on my side.
On a serious note, I’d like to thank the Royal Aeronautical Society, Aviation Network Ltd, Janine Hornsby, Chris Hope and others for a great evening in their company. I hope this blog has inspired you to network and invest in your dream whatever that may be.
